ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: MOSES CONE CARRIAGE HOUSE ON BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY
From our heartwarming series of images taken at the Moses Cone Estate... Amidst the vibrant tapestry of autumn leaves I revisited the enchanting Moses Cone Carriage House on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Blowing Rock North Carolina. The air was crisp and the golden hues of fall painted a masterpiece around this historic gem in the Blue Ridge Mountains. As sunlight filtered through the foliage a feeling of serenity washed over me. The rustic backdrop of the historic building and the warm hues of fall cast a serene ambiance that whispered tales of bygone eras. Born in Jonesborough Tennessee Moses Cone was educated in Baltimore Maryland. In 1888 he married Bertha Lindau. There were no children born to this union. Cone was a noted textile entrepreneur conservationist and philanthropist of the Gilded Age. He founded a company that became a leading manufacturer of denim and was a major supplier to Levi Strauss and Company for nearly a century. In the mid 1890s Moses and his wife Bertha built their summer estate known as Flat Top Manor which was a 23-room 13000 square foot mansion overlooking Bass Lake near the town of Blowing Rock. Cone built 25 miles of carriage trails on the estate for the enjoyment of his wife the trails have an abundance of rhododendron and mountain laurel. The estate included about 500 acres of farmland Flat Top Mountain and nearby Rich Mountain. In poor health Cone died in 1908 at the age of 51. His wife Bertha continued to manage the estate until her death in 1947. Both are buried in a small cemetery approximately 1 mile from the manor. After Mrs. Cone’s death the estate was transferred to the National Park Service. Today the Moses H. Cone Estate is open to the public and houses a craft shop and demonstration center and this beautiful carriage house. This artwork is ideal for nature enthusiasts history buffs and anyone with a penchant for serene landscapes... It’s a homage to the beauty of our stunning Blue Ridge Parkwa
